HST 110: Remembering War and Disaster (Fall 2017): Newspapers

Search Tips

To improve your results when searching for newspaper articles on a particular topic, try the following:

  • Limit your search by publication date - there is almost always a feature that allows you to search within a specific publication date range on the database advanced search page
  • Remember to use terms and phrases that would likely have been used at the time that these articles were written. For example, World War I was often referred to as "the great war" during and immediately after its occurrence.
  • If you're researching international events, remember that country names have changed significantly over time - for example, if you're researching war experiences in Russia, you may need to use the terms "Russia," "Soviet Union," or "Russian Federation," depending on the time period of your research.
