Multicultural and Diverse Children's Literature

Identifying quality children's literature can be a time consuming task. Teachers want to be sure that the literature they use offers positive role models for all children.

Online Stories

  • Aaron Shepard's World of Stories
Offers retellings of folktales, fairy tales, tall tales, myths, legends, magical tales, and sacred stories, plus original fables, humor, fantasy, and historical fiction all by Aaron Shepard.

  • The Baldwin Online Children's Project
Offers literature for children that is in the public domain in the United States, most from the early 20th century.

  • Childrens Books Online: The Rosetta Project
Bills itself as the largest collection of antique illustrated books online.

  • Long Time Ago: Stories for Children
Author Rohini Chowdhury offers her retelling of classic children's stories.

  • Mrs. P.
A children's entertainment site that celebrates reading and books. Mrs. P brings Story Time to life with her video library of classic children's stories—all of which offer special read-along options. A focus on the classics make this less than ideal for those interested in multicultural issues, but it is a fun site that children will enjoy.

  • World Public Library Children's Literature Collection
Compiled from scans of original children's books.
