PKG 485: Package System Development: Laws and Regulations

Federal Laws and Regulations

Local Regulations

City and county governments can create their own laws and regulations, as well as requiring special licenses and permits for the operation of certain businesses.  You can find more information by going to the websites for the county and cities that the business will operate in.

Trade Organizations

Trade organizations and associations can also make their own recommendations and guidelines.  While these might not necessarily be enforced by the law, they are still recommended as best pratices.

Additional Tips

It can be hard to tell what agencies or associations may have regulations or guidelines for your product.  You can use Google to try to make your life a bit easier.  However, instead of a standard Google keyword search, try the following:

keyword site:.gov

  • mushroom chips regulations site:.gov

This example would look for your keyword only on websites that end with .gov.  You can also limit to specific sites by searching

keyword site:michigan.gov

  • butter site:michigan.gov

You can also use site:.org to just look for sites with a .org extension (which is what most associations use)

Play around with keywords

If you aren't finding anything related to your topic, think about changing your keywords, such as using synonyms or broad terms.

Instead of baklava, try pastry, for example
