Files for the Workshop

These are icons to use with ArcGIS provided layers. ArcGIS provides a number of default icons, these are potential alternates.

To change the picture, right-click on the picture below and select 'Copy Link Location." Then in ArcGIS Online next to a layer select "Change Symbols," Options, Change Symbol, Add an Image, then paste in the URL.  Click Apply, and Done.

These are text layers.  Right-click on each link location and choose "Copy Link Location." Then In ArcGIS Online, click on Add - Add layer from web -- paste URL -- Pull down the list and choose "A CSV File" and click "Add Layer."

To change the picture, right-click on the picture below and select 'Copy Link Location." Then in ArcGIS Online next to a layer select "Change Symbols," Options, Change Symbol, Add an Image, then paste in the URL.  Click Apply, and Done.

These are Shapefile layers and they are saved to the workstop laptop desktops. In ArcGIS Online, click on Add - Add layer from File.  Browse to the file location then click "Add Layer."

Make Your House be a Dot

Step One: Get the latitude/longitude coordinate for your house

  • Go to http://maps.google.com
  • Type in your house address and click the search button to zoom the map to your site.
  • Right click on your house and choose "What's here?"
  • The Latitude and Longitude coordinates will appear under the address search box.
  • You can write down the coordinates, or copy and paste them somewhere else.

Step Two: Create a File to Upload

  • Open Microsoft Excel and type in the first three cells across: Place   Lat   Long .   On the second row in the first three cells across type: house   [your latitude]   [your longitude].  Example: 
    • Place          Lat          Long
    • house         42.7312   -84.4832
  • Save the file as plain text, tab delimited
  • *OR* open Notepad or other simple word processor and type in the same information with tabs in between each piece of information.  Save as a plain text file

Step Three: Upload your feature

  • In ArcGIS Online, click on "Add -- Add layer from file"
  • Browse to your file location and select the file you just created
