Collection Development Policy Statement: Business

Purpose or Scope of Collection

Curricular/Research/Programmatic needs:

The primary purpose of the collection is to supply the literature and data resources needed to support the teaching, service, and research needs of the faculty and students of the College of Business (COB), The School of Hospitality Business, and School of Human Resources and Labor Relations (SHRLR). It also supports faculty and students in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations in the College of Communication Arts & Sciences.

The COB supports the following disciplines: Accounting, Finance, Management, Marketing, Supply Chain Management, and Hospitality Business. Undergraduate majors include Accounting, Finance, Hospitality Business, Human Resource Management, Management, Marketing, and Supply Chain Management. The College also offers masters and PhD level degrees in Accounting, Finance, Information Technology Management, Logistics, Management, Marketing, and Operations and Sourcing Management. They also offer specialty masters in areas for data, customer experience, financial planning, healthcare management, and more. The college also offer online graduate certificates in accounting, healthcare, HR, leadership, and more. They also provide minors on Business, Entrepreneurship And Innovation, Environmental And Sustainability Studies, Financial Planning And Wealth Management,
Information Technology, Insurance And Risk Management, International Business, Real Estate, Retail Management, Sales Leadership, and Sports Business Management.

In addition, the collection supports the business-related needs of faculty and students throughout the campus in any department where a business-related course is offered or other departments interested in the employment relationship or the workplace. Finally, the Business Library is a resource for local business people, State of Michigan employees, practitioners representing both management and labor, and community users.

The enrollment statistics for the COB average over 7,500 undergrad and graduate students. The faculty number over 170.

The COB is a recognized leader in Supply-chain management and Logistics. The School of Hospitality Business is consistently ranked among the top three nationwide. SHRLR is often recognized as one of the best graduate programs of its kind in the U.S.

The COB has special units and programs including Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Center for Railway Research and Education, Center for Venture Capital, Private Equity, & Entrepreneurial Finance, Institute for Business Research, and International Business Center (IBC). IBC is a federally funded program that promotes international trade and global competitiveness, by supporting scholarly activities in international business. Entrepreneurship and global initiatives have been a priority. The College also has a special relationship, which includes the sharing of classes and resources with the Department of Economics in the College of Social Science. They also have a working relationship with the College of Engineering.
