Creating Stable Links to Medical Ebooks: AccessMedicine

Links to Access Products

Always use the IP authenticated links above to access these resources. This will ensure you can create stable links.

All of the Access platforms, which deliver McGraw-Hill licensed resources, forward users to the new edition when it becomes available. This means that their links should not break when a new edition is released. This may not be true 100% of the time and we recommend checking your stable links periodically to ensure their viability.

This page has been update 10/24/2016 with important changes to how you need to make stable links to Access resources - you must change the proxy information from the link generated by the content platform.

Creating Stable Links to Books in AccessMedicine, AccessSurgery, AccessAnesthesiology, and AccessEmergencyMedicine

1. Find the book, either through our ebook guide, finding the text in MSU's library catalog, or by searching any Access platform (via the library link to the platform). All of these options will give you a link that can be used without any changes.

2a. In our ebook guide right-click on the book's titles and copy the link. That link can be pasted directly into your course materials. It will already have the ezproxy string attached to it. For example, Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine is linked like this from our ebook guide: http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url=http://accessmedicine.mhmedical.com/book.aspx?bookID=1130

2b. You can also search for a book in MSU's library catalog. Select the title you want, make sure it is followed by [electronic resource] because this title denotes an electronic book from a print book. In the electronic book's catalog record right-click on the link below the "Available Online:" text. This link contain the ezproxy string and can be pasted directly into course materials.

For example, Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine is linked like this from the library catalog: http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url=http://accessmedicine.mhmedical.com/book.aspx?bookID=1130

2c. In Access platforms simply copy the URL from your browser's address bar. It will have either a .proxy1.cl.msu.edu or .proxy2.cl.msu.edu in the URL. For example, Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine is linked like this from within AccessMedicine: http://accessmedicine.mhmedical.com.proxy2.cl.msu.edu/book.aspx?bookID=1130

You MUST change this URL or it may not load efficiently for users. The changes to the URL only involve the first section of the URL - remove the .proxy1(2).cl.msu.edu string. Add the standard EZProxy string to the front of the URL and the link should work.

Creating Stable Links to Book Chapters in AccessMedicine, AccessSurgery, AccessAnesthesiology, and AccessEmergencyMedicine

To create a stable link the book chapters located in any of the Access platforms simply use the "Get Citation" option to create a stable link that you can copy and paste with no additional changes necessary. It will have a proxy link in it already and you do not need to add the ezproxy-string. You must be logged into Access through your MSU Netid for it to create a proxy'd link.

For example, to link to Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine  Chapter 83e: Chromosome Disorders:

1. Find the book, either through our ebook guide, searching AccessMedicine (via the library link to the platform), or by searching for the text in MSU's library catalog.

2. Click on the chapter title from the book's table of contents.

3. Click on the Get Citation link above the chapter title.

4. After clicking the Get Citation link a dialog box will appear on your screen. This will have three citation options. Copy the URL at the bottom of any of the citations and remove the final period.

The stable URL for this text from the "Get Citation" link would be:http://accessmedicine.mhmedical.com.proxy2.cl.msu.edu/content.aspx?bookid=1130&Sectionid=66487725

You MUST change this URL or it may not load efficiently for users. The changes to the URL only involve the first section of the URL - remove the .proxy1(2).cl.msu.edu string. Add the standard EZProxy string to the front of the URL and the link should work.

Creating Stable Links to Sections in in AccessMedicine, AccessSurgery, AccessAnesthesiology, and AccessEmergencyMedicine Book Chapters

By navigating to a section in a chapter via the left hand navigation bar, the URL exposes the unique ID associated with that section.  You can link directly to a specific section within a chapter by copying the URL in their browser address bar.

Please note that you will need to put the EZproxy string http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url= in front of the section URL and remove the .proxy1(2).cl.msu.edu if it appears in the URL. Like the examples above for books and chapters.

For example, Harrison's Internal Medicine. Chapter 82 "Genes, the environment, and disease." Section: Impact of Genetics and Genomics on Medical Practice. URL: http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url=http://accessmedicine.mhmedical.com/content.aspx?bookid=1130&sectionid=79728075
