Creating Stable Links to Medical Ebooks: ClinicalKey

Link to ClinicalKey

Always use the IP authenticated link above to access this resource. This will ensure you can create stable links.

ClinicalKey has over 1100 medical and clinical textbooks on its platform. All of these can be linked at a book and chapter level.

This page has been updated 07/21/2017 with important changes to how you need to make stable links to ClinicalKey resources - you must change the proxy information and some of the source URL from the link generated by the content platform or off campus users may not be able to get to the book or chapter.

Creating Stable Links to Books in ClinicalKey

ClinicalKey has a list of stable URLs to their ebooks which can be found on their "Implementation" page under the "durable URLS" section. Add the MSU Ezproxy string http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url= to these and they will work for off campus users.

You can also create the link yourself by:

1. Find the book, either through our ebook guide or finding the text in MSU's library catalog, These options will give you a link that can be used without any changes.

2a. In our ebook guide right-click on the book's titles and copy the link. That link can be pasted directly into your course materials. It will already have the ezproxy string attached to it. For example, Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease is linked like this from our ebook guide http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url=https://www.clinicalkey.com/dura/browse/bookChapter/3-s2.0-C20110055734

2b. You can also search for a book in MSU's library catalog. Select the title you want, make sure it is followed by [electronic resource] because this title denotes an electronic book from a print book. In the electronic book's catalog record right-click on the link below the "Available Online:" text. This link contain the ezproxy string and can be pasted directly into course materials.

For example, Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease is linked like this from the library catalog: http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url=https://www.clinicalkey.com/dura/browse/bookChapter/3-s2.0-C20110055734

2c. If you copy the URL from within ClinicalKey it will have either a .proxy1.cl.msu.edu or .proxy2.cl.msu.edu in the URL. For example, Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease is linked like this from within ClinicalKey https://www-clinicalkey-com.proxy1.cl.msu.edu/#!/browse/book/3-s2.0-C20110055734

You MUST change this URL or it may not load for off campus users. Add the standard EZProxy string to the front of the URL, and change the URL before the numerical sequence to https://www.clinicalkey.com/dura/browse/bookChapter/ and the link should work and will look like this:

http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url=https://www.clinicalkey.com/dura/browse/bookChapter/3-s2.0-C20110055734

Creating Stable Links to Book Chapters in ClinicalKey

ClinicalKey has a list of stable URLs to book chapters which can be found on their "Implementation" page under the "durable URLS" section. Add the MSU Ezproxy string http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url= to these and they will work for off campus users.

You can also make the link yourself:

To create a stable link to book chapters use the email option to have ClinicalKey create a stable link that you can copy and paste with a few neccessary additional changes.  You need to add the MSU ezproxy string and remove several characters from the URL. You must be logged into ClinicalKey through your MSU Netid for it to create a proxy'd link.

For example, if you wish to link to Robbins and Cotran: Pathologic Basis of Disease Chapter 7: Neoplasia these are the steps you would do:

1. Find the book, either through our ebook guide, searching ClinicalKey (via the library link to the platform), or by searching for the text in MSU's library catalog.

2. Click on the chapter title from the books table of contents.

3. Click on the envelope icon at the far right of the screen.

4. After selecting the envelope icon a dialog box will appear on your screen. At the bottom of the book will be an icon that looks like a chain and the name of the chapter. The chapter name is a hyper link. Right-click on the chapter name and choose "copy link location." This will copy the underlying, proxy'd hyperlink.

The URL will look similar to this: http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url=https://www.clinicalkey.com/dura/browse/bookChapter/3-s2.0-B9781455726134000074

You MUST change this URL or it may not load for off campus users. Add the standard EZProxy string to the front of the URL, and change the URL before the numerical sequence to https://www.clinicalkey.com/playContent/ and the link should work and will look like this:
