This meeting of global leaders from more than 140 countries is a follow-up to the 1972, 1992, and 2002 meetings on sustainable development. The emphasis will be on reviewing progress, or lack of, on the Agenda 21 goals outlined at the Rio summit in 1992. Economic, environmental and social policy issues will be discussed and addressed.

The Earth Summit 2012 is subtitled the Stakeholder Forum for a Sustainable Future. It runs parallel with the official government involved UNCSD and includes NGOs, businesses, and other non-governmental actors.
