Searching the Library Catalog

Materials by and about an author will be shelved near one another. To identify the general call number range for a given author (so you can browse) or the exact call number for specific books, use the Library Catalog.

Search by Author:

Type the author's last name first, followed by the first name (if you know it). For example:

  • Buchner, Georg
  • Goethe, Johann Wolfgang
  • Heine, Heinrich

You may then Modify your search to material type (printed), and/or language (e.g., German if you don't want translations).

Search by Subject:

Find materials ABOUT an author (such as criticisms and interpretations) by doing a subject search using the author's name (last name first, followed by first name). For example:

  • Brentano, Clemens
  • Keller, Gottfried

Search by Keyword:

Find materials addressing a particular topic. For example:

  • "Literary collections"  (to find examples of anthologies)
  • German literature themes 19th century ("and" between words is assumed)
  • Kleist and criticism and interpretation

Again, you can modify your search by material type and/or language as described above.
