The MSU Libraries subscribes to a couple of map applications that allow you to visually compare all kinds of variables in different places. Policy Map has an especially good set of health-related data layers (and is somewhat easier to use). These may help you develop a research question--they're fairly easy to use, and most students find themselves curious about the differences they find between different places.
