Atmospheric Sciences Guide - Climatology, Meteorology: Michigan Weather Resources

This guide will assist you in finding materials in these atmospheric sciences: climatology and meterology.

Michigan Weather Sites

Michigan State Climatologist's Office
-- Click on the Map of Michigan option, then choose a county to see the weather stations available.  Click on a weather station dot to see a list of data sets available.

Enviro-weather Automated Weather Station Network (formerly known as the Michigan Automated Weather Network, or MAWN)
This is a program associated with The Generating Research and Extension to Meet Economic and Environmental Needs (GREEEN) Initiative, a joint partnership between the state's major commodity groups and food processors, the state government, the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station, and Michigan State University  signed into law in 1998. A major emphasis of the GREEN  initiative is improved efficiency and productivity of agriculture through the expanded use of Integrated Crop Management (ICM)  strategies, many of which require highly detailed weather data and information.  For station-specific weather data and related information, you can select from the available stations displayed on the map or from the station table. [Librarian note: I haven't seen anything older than 2007 here so far...-kww]

The earliest M. A. C. weather data and meteorological tables were routinely published in the Annual report of the secretary of the State Board of Agriculture of the State of Michigan.

National Climatic Data Center - Local Climatological Data
Access is free only if you are accessing from a ".edu" IP address. Local Climatological Data (LCD) contains summaries from major airport weather stations that include a daily account of temperature extremes, degree days, precipitation amounts and winds. Also included are the hourly precipitation amounts and abbreviated 3-hourly weather observations. This is the final quality controlled copy and generally has a one to two month time lag.  [Librarian note: I'm finding Lansing information back to 1923, with some mentions of record highs and lows looking back as far as 1861--kww]

GHCN global daily [electronic resource]
Global Historical Climatology Network Global Daily database contains daily precipitation, snow, and temperature data from over 43,000 stations worldwide. The data categories are WMO Region/Continent, Country, Station, Parameter Index, and Daily Data. 2008.
