Accessibility Resources for MSU Libraries Staff

This guide was designed to compile accessibility resources and information for staff at the MSU Libraries.

Accessibility License Language

The MSU Libraries attempts to insert the Big Ten Academic Alliance Library E-Resource Accessibility Group's ideal accessibility language into our e-resource licenses.

Summary of Accessibility Language

  • Comply with the Americans for Disabilities Act (ADA) by supporting assistive technology consistent with standards in WCAG 2.1 AA.
  • Ensure product maintenance and upgrades do not compromise accessibility.
  • Provide a current and accurate Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT).
  • If the product does not comply, vendor must adapt materials in a timely manner at no cost.
  • Materials can be adapted for accessibility by the licensee and the end user.

E-Resource Accessibility Testing/Evaluation

The MSU Libraries has performed some internal accessibility evaluations but mostly rely on accessibility evaluations from the Library Accessibility Alliance (previously completed/funded by the Big Ten).

Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT)

A Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) is a document that provides information about how well a product conforms with accessibility guidelines.

  • Can be used to quickly get an idea as to what aspects of a product are known to be inaccessible.
  • The contents of VPATs are self-disclosed by vendors, and may not address the overall product usability when using assistive technology.
  • They are not a replacement for third-party accessibility evaluations.
