What is a DEM?

DEM stands for digital elevation model. The model is usually a raster file with representation of continuous elevation values over a topographic surface by a regular array of z-values (contained in pixels). The resolution of DEMs varies depending on the area the pixels represent. DEMs are typically used to represent terrain relief. This page provides links to sources of and information about DEMs.
