Africana Special Collections at MSUL: African Activist Archive

A guide to using the resources on Africa available in MSUL Special Collections.

About the African Activist Archive

The African Activist Archive project preserves and makes accessible online the records of activism in the United States to support the struggles of African peoples against colonialism, apartheid, and social injustice from the 1950s through the 1990s. The website includes a growing (over 10,000 item) online archive of digitized materials, including pamphlets, newsletters, leaflets, buttons, posters, T-shirts, photographs, and audio and video recordings.

MSU Libraries' Special Collections partners with the African Activist Archive to house many of the complete physical collections represented on the online repository. These collections are treated like any other manuscript collection, and they are made available for researcher use in the Special Collections Reading Room. A note in the catalog record and finding aid will indicate the material is a part of the African Activist Archive, and the catalog records are linked from the AAA website.
