USGS Geographic Names Information System
All places and features in the U.S. and its territories. Most people use this site to find the latitude / longitude of a place or feature, or to learn the name of the USGS topographic quadrangle that depicts it. The powerful search engine, however, allows creation of lists by criteria, for instance all summits over 1,000 feet in elevation or all lakes or islands or cemeteries within a certain state or county. Lists are exportable as pipe-delimited files.
Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names
This contains fewer entries than the NGA gazetteer listed above, but it provides useful information about the context of a place: For instance it places a City within a District within a Province, within a Nation, within a Continent.
