CSUS 802 Foundations of Interdisciplinary Research: Reading Backwards Project

Backwards - Forwards Articles Project.

This project will show how research and publications can influence research going forward.

Procedure

  1. Identify an article (B).
  2. Examine the citations of B, and select one (A) This is the oldest article.
  3. Search the literature for an article that cites both A and B. This is article C, the newest.
  4. Read the articles in chronological order and see how the earlier articles influence the following articles.

Mechanics

  1. Identify article B, the middle one, chronologically. It should be 3+ years old, at least. The more times it is cited, the easier the project will be.
  2. Examine the citations of B and select one; this is article A.
  3. Search Google Scholar for the title of article B and A.
    1. Remember to place the title of B in quote marks so it will be searched as a phrase.
    2. Make sure "include citations" in the left column is checked.
    3. At the bottom of the result(s) is the link to click: Showing the best result for this search. See all results..
    4. These should be most recent articles that cite both earlier articles. Check the references for both articles.
    5. Select article C.
  4. Read the three articles in chronological order - A-B-C.
  5. Return to B and see how the authors cited A.
  6. Examine C for how the authors treated articles A and B.
