Open Pedagogy & Renewable Assignments

For faculty interested in learning more about open pedagogy and specifically about finding/designing open pedagogy assignments that are right for their courses

What is Open Pedagogy?

"Open pedagogy has many definitions. We are defining open pedagogy as projects or assignments which have the characteristics of: engaging with students as creators of information rather than simply consumers of it; experiential learning in which students demonstrate understanding through the act of creation; inviting students to be part of the teaching process/participating in the co-creation of knowledge; moving away from single-use assignments in favor of situated , collaborative , and renewable ones; Student agency in deciding if and how their work is shared ."

What are Renewable Assignments?

"Renewable assignments are a key component of open pedagogy. These are assignments that are designed to be reused and repurposed by students, rather than simply being completed and forgotten. They encourage students to engage with the material in a more meaningful way and to take ownership of their learning. Renewable assignments allow students to build on prior work and share their knowledge with a wider audience."
