Steps in Conducting a Literature Review

  1. Define your research question
  2. Refine topic based on initial search results
  3. Decide on the scope of your literature review; identify databases and keyterms for searching
  4. Conduct search and find key studies and review articles
  5. Export references and organize with citation management software
  6. Identify gaps in the literature: what's missing?
  7. Analyse and review studies with regard to methodology, funding source, citations by others
  8. Write literature review
