Screencasting: Tips and Tricks

An introduction to tools and tips for creating screencasts "on the fly."

Best Practices for Creating "On the Fly" Screencasts

  • Turn off or hide browser toolbars.
  • Close email and other programs (Twitter, Meebo) that display alert messages on desktop.
  • Keep length of screencast under 1-1/2 minutes....3 minutes is the maximum time recommended.
  • Do a practice run before creating a screencast.
  • While recording, type and navigate around the screen slower than usual and move the mouse pointer out of the recorded area.
  • After recording, preview the screencast to be sure it is complete and easy to follow.
  • If recording without audio, make note of it so that the viewer does not think the audio isn't working.
  • If recording with audio, it may be helpful to create a script and practice before recording. Speak clearly!
  • Eliminate dialogue that doesn't describe any action and synch visual elements with your narration.
  • Minimize background noise by recording in as quiet a place as possible.  Close your door and turn off your phone.
  • Don't call it a "screencast" and be creative when labeling/adding titles.
  • Share widely (it's easy)! People won't view the screencast if they don't know it exists.
  • Have fun! Don't be afraid to experiment...you will get better each time and mistakes are easy to erase.
