This page shows how to create stable links to videos in databases that are licensed by MSU Libraries. Stable links (also called permalinks or stable URLs) are more-or-less permanent URLs that link to specific content. When you use a stable URL to link to a resource licensed by MSU, it will authenticate faculty, staff, or students as having the right to access that content.
To create a stable URL, you will have to copy a specific string of characters that will route users through MSU's proxy servers and ask them to enter their NetID and password. The instructions on these pages will tell you how to link to different video resources licensed by the library. For ALL of these resources, it is important to look carefully at the link you find. The MSU "Ezproxy string" will be referenced throughout and shown in examples, for reference the Ezproxy string is http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url=
For example, if the original link looks like this:
http://batesvisualguide.com.proxy2.cl.msu.edu.proxy1.cl.msu.edu/
you will reformat it to look like this:
http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url=http://batesvisualguide.com
Stable links are not available for every resource and some may become unstable after a period of time. You must be diligent in managing them. The library does not assume responsibility for notifying users when stable links become unavailable or stop working.
These instructions are subject to change and we suggest checking the guide periodically to ensure you are conforming to current best practices for creating stable links.
The way you find stable links varies from resource to resource--sometimes you can just copy and paste the link in your browser, but this won't work for most resources. To find specific instructions for videos from different databases and journals, use the menu options to the left.
To get the stable links to videos in these databases, navigate to the video and then copy the URL you see in your browser.
Once you have it, delete the string proxy1.cl.msu.edu or proxy2.cl.msu.edu from the URL, and add http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url= to the beginning of the link.
The result will be a stable link to your video, which will look something like this:
http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url=http://accessmedicine.mhmedical.com/MultimediaPlayer.aspx?MultimediaID=5481335
To link to a video in one of the Alexander Street Press databases (there are several of these, but you will be able to recognize them because they all have alexanderstreet somewhere in the URL), click the Embed/Link button below the video title.
A box will appear with a permanent link and an embed code. Copy the permanent link. Delete the string proxy2(or 1).cl.msu.edu from the link and add the Ezproxy string to the front of the URL. The result will be your stable link, which should look something like http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url=https://search.alexanderstreet.com/view/work/bibliographic_entity|video_work|2078352
Bates' Visual Guide to Physical Examination and OSCE Clinical Skills Videos
To link to a Bates' video, note the title of the video you want, and then navigate to the Bates list of persistent URLs (this will open a PDF document).
Locate the URL to the video that you are interested in, and copy it.
Add http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url= to the beginning of the link. You now have a stable link for your video, which should look something like http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url=http://batesvisualguide.com/multimediaplayer.aspx?multimediaid=6091076

You now have a stable link for your video, which should look something like http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url=http://fod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=106835&xtid=110382
To link to a video in JoVE, look below the video itself for the DOI link and copy it (see image below). Note that there is one link for the DOI and one link for the issue of the journal--they are next to each other but not the same. Make sure you are copying the DOI link!
Once you have the DOI number string, add http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/ . You now have a stable link for your video which will look something like http://ezproxy.msu.edu/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.3791/56204
To create a stable link to JoVE Science Education videos, start by copying the link from the browser URL bar. You MUST change this URL or it may not load for off campus users.
To link to a video from LWW Health, navigate to the video and then copy the URL you see in your browser.
