Smart Gardening is MSU Extension’s campaign using earth-friendly messages to help gardeners make smart choices in their own backyards. The goal is to equip gardeners with a “tool kit” of research-based knowledge to use immediately at home. Whether choosing plants, using garden chemicals, fertilizer or applying water, gardeners need to understand the long-term impacts on their communities. Let’s Garden Lansing (LGL) is a networking group for organizations which provide both formal and informal gardening education in the greater Lansing area. The group meets twice a year (Oct/Nov and Jan/Feb) to promote awareness of Lansing’s gardening education options. To get involved with the group, email lansingletsgarden@gmail.com. We provide access to land, how-to education, free seeds and plants, tool lending, a networking hub and more so that all community members can have access to fresh healthy food through gardening opportunities. We support a network of nearly 115 community gardens and 500 home gardens, helping to feed more than 8,000 people. Some of our community gardens serve large refugee populations, others integrate school curricula, some are for donation, and others still are simply neighborhood gathering spaces to grow a stronger community. We would love to have you join us!

The Hunter Park GardenHouse, a project of Allen Neighborhood Center, is a hub for year-round farm & garden education, where neighbors volunteer to grow food, flowers, and community, and youth develop job and life skills in service to the neighborhood.
Since 2008, the Hunter Park GardenHouse has empowered neighbors to grow, prepare, and eat healthy food to better their health and become better connected with the community. We are open 6 days a week, and offer a wide assortment of programs.

Michigan heirloom seeds are now available at the East Lansing Public Library! Choose from a selection of vegetable, herb and flower seeds to take home, plant, grow and enjoy.

As of 2023, Capital Area District Libraries’ have 9 branches with seed libraries. Must have a CADL card to 'check out' seeds.
