Publishing for Engineers

What is ORCID

ORCID stands for Online Research Contributor iD. It provides a non-proprietary persistent digital identifier that distinguishes you from every other researcher, even those with very similar names, and ensures that your work is recognized.

Getting Started

1. Sign up on ORCID's website with your MSU email and password

  • Visit https://orcid.org/signin;

  • Choose Sign in through your institution, enter "Michigan State University" and log in with your MSU credentials;

  • You can either link your MSU credentials with an existing account or register for a new ORCID.

2. Add your information

Once you've created an ORCID iD, it's easy to add your scholarly works to your ORCID record, enable automatic updates, and delegate management of your record to someone else.

3. Use your ORCID

Include your ORCID iD on your webpage, when you submit publications, apply for grants, and in any research workflow to ensure you get credit for your work.

Adding Information to your ORCID

There are three main ways to add works to your ORCID record:

  • Link your works from another system (recommended)
    • To link works from another system, choose Search & link from the Add menu in the works portion of your record.
    • Select a system from the list (CrossRef and DataCite are good general sources, others will depend on your discipline). You'll be asked to authorize the system, and will then be able to identify works in that system that are yours and that you would like transferred to your record. Each system behaves a little differently, and there may be a couple of intermediate steps not described here. For more information, see Importing work from other systems in the ORCID Help Center.
  • Import a BibTeX file of your works
  • Manually type in information about your works
    • To manually type in information about your works, choose Add manually from the Add works menu in the works portion of your record, and complete the form to describe a work. For more information, see Add works manually in the ORCID Help Center

ORCID Visibility

You may control how much of your ORCID record is publicly visible. For both your personal information and information about your works, three settings are available:

Screenshot_2021-11-26_at_17.21.18.png Trusted parties: information is visible only to individuals and organizations you authorize

For more information, see Visibility Settings in the ORCID Help Center, and ORCID's privacy policy

Tips for Using ORCID

  • Make your works public. This maximizes the potential for integration of your ORCID iD into other systems, and automatic updating of databases to attach your iD to your works.
  • Add at least some personal information (brief bio, education and/or employment) to your ORCID record, and make it public. This can help others distinguish you from people with the same name if they don't know your ORCID iD.
  • Add name variants, if you have published under other names or variations of your name.
  • Allow someone else to manage your record. If you grant a delegate access to your ORCID record, they can update and manage the record on your behalf. Note that delegates must have their own ORCID iD to log in. You can add a trusted individual in your account settings. For more information, see Add a trusted individual to your account in the ORCID Help Center.
