What is ROR ID?

The Research Organization Registry (ROR) has IDs and metadata for more than 110,000 organizations. ROR is a community led effort to create open, persistent identifiers for research organizations. Organizations can change names over time, but a ROR ID will stay the same regardless of name changes. The goal is to make it easier for humans and computers to disambiguate institution names and connect organizations to researchers. ROR IDs are used in journal publishing systems, data repositories, funder platforms and in other research infrastructure tools.

Parts of a ROR ID

The organization record in the ROR database contains more than just the organization name.

Here are the main parts of a ROR record:

  • ROR ID
  • Name of the organization
  • Other names or acronyms for the organization
  • Link to the organization's website
  • Type of organization
  • Any relationships the organization may have to parent or child organizations
  • Location (with GeoNames ID)
  • Other identifiers like ISNI, GRID ID, and Crossref Funder ID
