Citation Managers

Citation managers save and organize your references more efficiently. You can use a citation manager to keep track of the papers you've read, and automatically create citations or reference lists in many different citation styles. Many of these tools allow you to collaborate with others on your citations. If you are working on a literature review, we HIGHLY recommend you use a citation manager.

There are three main citation managers that MSU Libraries recommends:

  • EndNote and EndNote Online (available through Web of Science): LibGuide on EndNote
    • Citation management software that allows you to collect and organize your references and create bibliographies. Note - EndNote is not free. See the LibGuide for information on acquiring or using EndNote.
  • Zotero: LibGuide about Zotero
    • Open source, online reference management tool. Citations and documents can be shared by groups for collaborative writing
  • Mendeley: LibGuide about Mendeley
    • Free reference manager and academic social network. You can manage your citations, collaborate with others, and discover new content.

If you use LaTeX, please see information on managing citations in LaTeX.
