Most of the material in the CMC was published over the past half century and was not produced using high quality paper. All material needs to be reviewed for problems (highly acidic paper, water damage, poor overall condition, mold) before it is added to the collection.
Once accepted material should be given all the necessary attention to proper housing to ensure its future use.
Accepted large donations often include books and materials that duplicate what is already in the collection, or falls outside the scope of the collection. In this case material may be deaccessioned and sent to MSU Surplus. Before deaccessioning, however, the donor should be aware in the donor agreement that material my be deaccessioned and given the option for the unwanted material to be returned.
