Stable Links for Electronic Resources

This is a how-to guide for creating permanent, stable links to MSU-owned full-text articles from online journals, e-books, and streaming video or other media.

Stable Links to E-Books

E-Books available from MSU Libraries display within our Library Catalog.  Some providers may allow you to link directly to the full text of an e-book once you locate the item in the catalog and click the link for Online Access.

For providers that don't have a Share Link to Book or other Share option on the Online Access landing page, use the Permanent Link option in the catalog record (see first image above) as your stable link and advise users they will need to click on the Online Access link within the catalog record once they have clicked on the provided stable link.  For some providers, this link may point directly to the book's content.  Other providers may have a Full Text PDF option on the left hand side requiring an additional click to access the book's content.

Stable Links to E-Book Chapters

Using the same example as above, to link to a specific chapter in an e-book rather than the book itself, expand the Table Of Contents for the book and click on the desired chapter.  Then use the URL for the chapter as your stable link.

The text of the chapter should open for viewing in the browser window when clicking on the stable link to the chapter. (In EBSCO, Full Download may require a separate, additional free EBSCO account and may have limits on how much of the book's content can be downloaded, saved, printed, etc.)
